Little Churchill River to Town of Churchill Canoe Trips Route:

Putting in Canoe on Little Churchill River

This route via the Little Churchill River and then the Churchill provides a variety of river experiences. The Little Churchill is a small river providing a variety “interesting whitewater, offering the choice of running or portaging” At the confluence of the Churchill River (or Lower Churchill), the river is much wider and following the development of the hydroelectric project up stream, much shallower than historic conditions. Prior to the Hydro development, the Churchill was a very challenging and formidable river with flows exceeding 60,000 cubic feet per second creating very treacherous rapids. At present these flow are much reduced and has transformed the river but it remains a very interesting and challenging river. Much of the river requires an interpretation of current and flow. The river provides a mix of quite water, wide shallow boulder strewn stretches and challenging rapids, some of which require portaging. Typically, moose and Black Bear, can bee encountered throughout the route as well as a variety of waterfowl and other bird life. There is also great fishing along the route, especially in Campbell and Recluse Lakes.

The estuary is home to over 3000 Beluga Whales are present on a 24/7 basis throughout the summer (along with the resident seal population) You could spend days, just being with these very friendly creatures as they seem to enjoy close encounters with people in canoes. In addition, Polar Bears might be sighted as you approach Hudson Bay as they are on the mainland during the summer months waiting for the ice flows of winter to return them to the sea ice to hunt seals.
